Enter three numbers. Results update live as you type — no button to press, nothing uploaded.

Rent, salaries, software, insurance — costs that don’t change with volume. Enter a number of 0 or more.
What a customer pays you for one unit or one sale. Enter a number of 0 or more.
Materials, shipping, card fees, hourly labor — the cost that rises with each sale. Enter a number of 0 or more.
The formula: Break-even units = Fixed Costs ÷ (Price − Variable Cost). The bottom half — price minus variable cost — is your contribution margin: the profit each sale contributes toward covering your fixed costs.

The honest math behind break-even.

No black box. Here is exactly what this tool computes and why — the same formulas an accountant or CFO uses.

Contribution margin first

Every sale brings in the price and costs you a variable amount to fulfill. What’s left is the contribution margin: Price − Variable Cost. That’s the dollars each sale contributes toward your fixed costs before any profit.

Break-even units

Divide fixed costs by the contribution margin: Fixed ÷ (Price − Variable). That’s how many units cover your fixed costs exactly. We round up to a whole unit — you can’t sell a fraction of a sale and still break even.

When margin is zero or negative

If your variable cost is equal to or higher than your price, each sale loses money and there is no break-even point — selling more only digs the hole deeper. Instead of dividing by zero, the tool warns you to fix the price or the cost first.

What this doesn’t include

This is a single-product break-even model. It doesn’t account for taxes, financing, seasonality, changing prices at volume, or a mix of products. It’s a fast, honest starting point — not a full financial forecast. Use it to sanity-check, then model deeper.
