P&L and Breakeven Math Explained
How is profit or loss calculated?
Gross P&L = (Exit Price − Entry Price) × Shares. Net P&L = Gross P&L − Total Commissions. Percentage return = Net P&L ÷ Cost Basis × 100. Cost basis = Entry Price × Shares + any entry commission.
How is the breakeven price calculated?
Breakeven Price = Entry Price + (Total Commissions ÷ Shares). This is the minimum exit price at which you recover your full cost including all commissions, resulting in exactly $0 net P&L.
How do I enter commissions?
Enter the total round-trip commission (buy commission + sell commission combined). If your broker charges $0 (many modern brokers do), enter 0 or leave blank. The calculator assumes you split fees evenly if you're checking a partial exit, but for a simple closed trade just enter your total fees.
Does this work for short sales?
The formula is the same for short sales — just enter the price you shorted as the entry and the price you covered as the exit. If the exit is lower than entry, the result will be a profit (as expected for a short). The calculator does not account for borrow fees on short positions.
